What happened
Sony announced the full-frame FX5 on July 22, opening preorders the same day and describing European availability only as ‘from August’. Announced pricing is €5,400 for the body and €6,000 with the XLR handle; Romanian stock has not been separately confirmed.
The camera records internally at up to 5K60, 4K120 and Full HD 240p. It is the first FX-series body to use the sensor’s full 3:2 area for Open Gate and to record Sony’s 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN RAW format internally. At launch, Open Gate is available only with X-OCN.
Why it matters
The useful shift is not resolution alone. Open Gate can supply cinema, 16:9 and vertical framings from one capture, while internal X-OCN may remove an external recorder from some builds. For small crews, that can mean fewer failure points—but considerably more storage, backup and post-production load.
What we're watching
Sony says firmware 2.0, planned for August 2027 or later, should add XAVC S-I Open Gate and X-OCN at up to 240 fps. Independent tests are still needed for rolling shutter, thermal behaviour, battery life, autofocus and usable dynamic range.
