What happened
The Motion Picture Association and ByteDance announced a memorandum of understanding on August 17. They describe a framework for intellectual-property protections around Seedance and Seedream across TikTok, the TikTok USDS Joint Venture, CapCut and Dreamina.
The announcement follows an MPA cease-and-desist letter in February and says subsequent model releases reflected advances in protection. The parties did not publish the MOU, the protected-title list, matching thresholds, testing method, audit rights, enforcement process or remedies for failure.
Why it matters
The news is the creation of a negotiated process, not proof that copyright risk has been solved. Without the agreement or repeatable tests, outsiders cannot judge coverage, false positives, geographic consistency or whether a guardrail survives paraphrase, reference-image changes and model updates.
What we're watching
We are watching whether the MOU or measurable safeguards are published, how independent creators can report misuse, and whether the framework covers training, output resemblance, naming and reference-image workflows separately.
