Four LUMIX S lenses gain a configurable control ring

Panasonic released firmware 2.0 on July 29, 2026 for the LUMIX S 14–28mm F4–5.6, S 18–40mm F4.5–6.3, S 28–200mm F4–7.1 and S 70–300mm F4.5–5.6. The update is available through the company’s global support page.

After updating, the focus ring can operate as a control ring with assignable key functions, while users can select the focus-rotation direction in manual-focus mode. Panasonic lists compatibility with the S1II, S1RII, S1IIE, S5II, S5IIX and S9. The S1RII, S5II, S5IIX and S9 also require updated body firmware to use the new options. Panasonic generally advises updating the body to its latest version before the lens and states that a camera body is required for installation. It documents no autofocus, stabilisation or optical-performance change in this release.

This is a small but useful change for operators who want consistent gestures across different lenses. A configurable ring can put exposure or another chosen function under the supporting hand, while reversible rotation reduces friction when moving between systems. The benefit still depends on the camera body and the correct firmware combination.

We will verify which functions can be assigned on each body, control latency and stepping, video behaviour, and whether the setting is stored per lens or per camera. Before installation, users should confirm the exact body version, charge the battery and follow the official procedure; the update must not be interrupted.
