Final Cut Pro 12.3 adds Auto Mask, Match Colour and Edit Detection

Final Cut Pro 12.3 is a final Mac release issued on June 30. Generate Captions creates and styles subtitles but requires Apple silicon and supports US English only. Auto Mask isolates recognised objects without manual tracking, while Edit Detection separates a rendered file into detected shots.

The release also revises Match Colour, sends a frame directly to Pixelmator Pro and generates HEVC proxies. Apple lists further trimming, subtitle, stability and media-compatibility improvements.

Apple is bringing time-consuming secondary work into the timeline. Fewer application round trips can matter in fast delivery, but colour decisions, mask quality and the meaning of a cut remain editorial responsibilities—not outputs to approve automatically.

Auto Mask still needs testing on hair, transparency, motion blur and occlusion. Match Colour should be checked across mixed log footage, and Edit Detection needs manual review around flashes and transitions.
