What we know

ARRI announced on August 12 that HONOR had launched the Robot Phone, the first commercial result of the companies’ Cinematic Imaging Partnership and the first consumer device to carry selected ARRI Image Science elements. It records 10-bit ARRI LogC3, uses ARRI Wide Gamut 3 and includes a selection of ARRI Looks intended to connect mobile capture with established editing and colour-grading workflows.

HONOR’s Titanium Agile Gimbal is described as supporting stabilised movement, subject tracking and hands-free operation. The device will initially be available in China. ARRI’s announcement does not provide a price or an international launch calendar, and it does not claim that the phone reproduces the sensor, optics or full dynamic range of an ARRI cinema camera.

MANAZYR perspective

LogC3 and Wide Gamut 3 are more meaningful for creators than a cinematic filter if the files survive a real colour-managed round trip. The collaboration could reduce friction between a phone and professional post-production, but the ARRI name is not evidence that small-sensor footage will match an ALEXA. The robotic camera also adds mechanical, safety and privacy questions beyond image quality.

What we’re watching

We are watching for international and Romanian availability, price, sensor and codec specifications, bitrate, measured dynamic range, LogC3 metadata and colour transforms, gimbal durability, tracking behaviour and consent controls when the device follows people. A downloadable sample workflow is needed before judging post-production compatibility.
