What happened
Apple announced two new desktop families on August 25: Mac mini can be configured with the all-new M6 or M5 Pro, while Mac Studio is offered with M5 Max or the new M5 Ultra. The precise product names matter: there is no model called ‘Mac Max M5’ or ‘M5 Studio Ultra’; they are Mac Studio configurations built around M5 Max and M5 Ultra.
M6 is Apple’s first 2-nanometre chip. In Mac mini it combines a 12-core CPU — 2 super cores, 4 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores — with a 12-core GPU that places a Neural Accelerator in every core, a dual 16-core Neural Engine and up to 170GB/s of memory bandwidth. The M6 configuration starts with 16GB and can be specified with up to 32GB of unified memory. Apple claims up to 40 percent faster CPU performance, twice the graphics performance and up to four times the AI performance of the M4 Mac mini; these are Apple’s preproduction benchmark results, not independent measurements.
The higher Mac mini tier stays on M5 Pro and trades the newer process generation for more scale: up to an 18-core CPU, a 20-core GPU, 64GB of unified memory and 307GB/s of bandwidth. Both mini models add Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and 2.5Gb Ethernet, with 10Gb Ethernet optional. The M6 model has three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports; M5 Pro raises those three ports to Thunderbolt 5 and adds support for clustering and USB-C genlock workflows.
Mac Studio begins with M5 Max: an 18-core CPU, up to a 40-core GPU, up to 128GB of unified memory and 614GB/s of bandwidth. M5 Ultra joins two dual-die M5 Max packages through next-generation UltraFusion, creating Apple’s first quad-die M-series design. It scales to a 36-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, 512GB of memory and 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth. Apple says its media engine can play 33 concurrent 8K/30 ProRes 422 streams, while Thunderbolt 5 and RDMA can link four Mac Studio systems for up to three times the company-measured inference performance of one machine.
US prices start at $899 for Mac mini with M6, $1,699 for Mac mini with M5 Pro, $2,499 for Mac Studio with M5 Max and $5,499 for Mac Studio with M5 Ultra, before tax. Apple opened preorders on August 25 in 30 countries and regions and says deliveries begin September 22; the 512GB Mac Studio configuration is due in late October. The reviewed releases do not establish an exact Romanian price, stock allocation or local delivery date.
Why it matters
This is not a clean one-number generational sweep. Apple puts its newest 2 nm M6 into the compact mainstream machine, but keeps the performance tiers on the wider M5 Pro, Max and Ultra designs. The useful comparison is therefore not M6 versus M5 by name; it is 32GB versus 64GB, 128GB or 512GB, plus memory bandwidth, GPU scale and sustained workload. For creators and local-AI teams, the real shift is that Apple is selling desktop Macs as private inference and media nodes — including clustering — rather than only as faster personal computers.
What we're watching
We are watching independent sustained CPU/GPU tests, real tokens-per-second across model sizes, memory pressure, power draw, noise, SSD performance and whether four-system RDMA clustering works with the tools teams actually use. We are also watching exact European and Romanian configurations, final local prices and the late-October 512GB shipment. MANAZYR has not tested any of these systems.
